Heavy Metals and their Associated Conditions
In our practice we regularly test patients for minerals including heavy metals. Finding high levels of metals is fairly common in our patient population. Heavy metals are cellular disruptors and are associated with disease processes. See: https://www.haaswellnesscenters.com/blog/how-heavy-metals-disrupt-cellular-metabolism
Here is a list of **common toxic heavy metals** and the **health conditions** associated with each:
1. Mercury (Hg)
Sources: Dental amalgams, fish (especially tuna, swordfish), vaccines (older formulations), fluorescent bulbs, industrial emissions
Associated Conditions:
- Neurological disorders (memory loss, tremors, anxiety)
- Chronic fatigue
- Autoimmune diseases
- Kidney damage
- Developmental delays in children
- Hormonal imbalances
2. Lead (Pb)
Sources: Old paint, plumbing pipes, contaminated soil, industrial waste, cosmetics (some imported), toys (non-U.S. made)
Associated Conditions:
- Learning disabilities and ADHD
- Behavioral issues in children
- Anemia
- High blood pressure
- Infertility
- Kidney dysfunction
3. Cadmium (Cd)
Sources: Cigarette smoke, batteries, industrial pollution, contaminated food (especially rice and grains), fertilizers
Associated Conditions:
- Kidney damage/cancer
- Bone loss (osteoporosis)
- Lung disease
- Hormonal disruption
- Increased cancer risk
- Fatigue and immune suppression
4. Aluminum (Al)
Sources: Cookware, antacids, deodorants, food additives, vaccines
Associated Conditions:
- Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline
- Nervous system disorders
- Fatigue
- Bone disorders
- Autoimmune reactions
5. Arsenic (As)
Sources: Contaminated water (especially well water), rice, pesticides, herbicides, pressure-treated wood
Associated Conditions:
- Skin lesions and cancers
- Cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Immune suppression
- Neuropathy
- Respiratory issues
6. Nickel (Ni)
Sources: Jewelry, stainless steel, coins, industrial exposure, some processed foods
Associated Conditions:
- Skin rashes (dermatitis)
- Allergies
- Lung and nasal cancers (chronic inhalation)
- Reproductive toxicity
- Fatigue and respiratory problems
7. Uranium (U)
Sources: Contaminated groundwater near mining areas, military exposure
Associated Conditions:
- Kidney damage
- DNA damage
- Increased cancer risk
- Immune suppression
Note: These heavy metals accumulate in tissues over time and can interfere with cellular processes, often leading to chronic, complex conditions. Detoxification under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider is essential for safe and effective removal.
